DIY organic mattress

Our bed:

I made the quilt on the left, my grandma made the one on the right.  Last spring, I wanted to get a bigger bed so there would be more room for the baby (our previous bed was a twin).  I also wanted to get an organic mattress because regular new mattresses apparently off-gas chemicals and you're just breathing that stuff in all night.  But organic mattresses are thousands of dollars.  So my solution was to buy two mattress pads or "toppers" and stack them together.  It was still a major investment, but much less than buying a king size organic mattress.

The bottom pad is latex and the top is wool (the latex is a "cal king" size which is slightly wider and shorter than a regular king...close enough though).  I got the wool pad here.  Good service, very nice product.  I cannot at all recommend the place that sold the latex mattress though.  I'll try to condense the story of the latex mattress pad fiasco:
-ordered said mattress pad
-had not received it by the date I was told it would arrive
-contacted them and they said "Oops! Your order slipped by us, we'll send it out and send two free pillows for your trouble"
-it finally arrived, it was a queen size and there were no pillows
-I contacted them again, they said "So sorry, totally our fault, keep the queen, sell it if you want, we'll send out the king size" (free pillows may have been mentioned again)
-weeks go by
-I contact them again, now they say I need to prove I have a queen size by sending pictures (luckily I'd hadn't sold the queen like they told me I could)
-I have a heated conversation with a guy on the phone and finally send pictures
-at long last the king size arrived (still no pillows though)

So we've been sleeping on this bed for almost 6 months, and it's a good set-up.  Very comfortable and plenty of room for the 3 of us and sometimes all 4 of us.

  1. I was shopping around for a comfortable mattress, but at the same time, I needed quality for the budget in mind. This was very important to me, because often enough, when people shop for their bed configurations, either quality or their savings are diminished. This was the case for me a few years back when I went to a local store: the inconvenient nature of shopping around at the retail store looking at beds that were either priced too high in comparison to the quality or priced low with terrible quality. http://www.amerisleep.com/amerisleep-vs-tempurpedic

  2. The thing here is that my wife and I have been thinking if we should buy an organic crib mattress for my baby, or just simply do what you have done. Well, it’s definitely clearer now – we should do what you did and just get the king-sized bed that you bought. That way, we can all sleep together as a family. Dante Storey

  7. When your day is winding down and all you can think about is hitting the sack, do you consider what you are sleeping on or in? Most of us usually look only for comfort in a mattress, soft sheets, warm blankets and matching decor. Most people do not lay in bed and wonder what chemicals they will be inhaling all night. Organic mattresses are becoming more popular with the knowledge of major side effects from chemicals put in synthetic bedding.organic mattress reviews
